Madrid de los Austrias

The historic centre of Madrid is often called the Madrid de los Austrias, which means Madrid of the Austrians. This rather strange name is in reference to the Austrian Kings (the Hapsburg) who ruled Spain during the 16th century and is regarded as the golden era of Madrid. The area of Madrid de los Austrias underwent a massive building program which constructed some of the city’s finest architecture.

The Madrid de los Austrias is styled in the Renaissance style through to early Baroque. Famous structures in the Madrid de los Austrias include the Palacio de Santa Cruz, Casa de la Villa and the Iglesia de San Andrés.
